ideas for home remodeling projects

Fewer homeowners preparing for large-scale home remodeling projects in 2011. But there are still plenty of great ideas for small projects.

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) polled their top builders and developers and found that while most people are not starting major renovation projects due to the economy, now is the time to take care of the smaller jobs around your home.

If you’re thinking about a few home remodeling projects of your own, it pays to evaluate your options and know which projects will give the most bang for your buck. Remember, when deciding on what to first, it’s not always about which project offers the highest monetary return on investment. If you’re not planning to move anytime soon, then quality of life should be at the top of your list. What remodeling project would bring you the most satisfaction on a day-to-day basis?

To help start your evaluation, here are some of the top ideas for home remodeling projects for 2011.

Start With Updates Instead of a Full Remodel

Homeowners should give themselves a budget and from there pick and choosing what projects they can do with the money. One way to save money is by updating features, like cabinets, but not remodeling an entire room.

Remodel the Things That Need It

Next year people will continue the trend of only completing the projects that need to be done, like repairs to siding or roof leaks, instead of “want-to” projects. Keep in mind that small projects can sometimes go a long way.

The Year of the Bathroom Remodel

Looks like 2011 may be the year for a bathroom update. Dennis D. Gehman, president of Gehman Custom Remodeling says, “Bathrooms are the hottest project. We think it’s due to the economy. Baths cost less than a kitchen or addition and most houses have more than one bath, so there are more available to be remodeled.” I have to agree. I am in the middle of a bathroom renovation myself! They are a great way to add value to the house without spending an enormous amount of money.

Remodel the Yard With a Backyard Makeover

Although the economy may be bouncing back in some areas, for the most part people are staying home instead of going out as much; therefore, projects related to outdoor living spaces will be big in 2011 as more people will be entertaining at home. Decks and pools are expected to be among the top amenities installed as summer approaches.

Be Open With a New Design

“Open floor plans are in, so we’re removing interior walls and opening up the spaces in older houses to modernize them,” says Gehman. Open floor plans help families be more flexible with the square footage they already have.
